Mortal Shell 2 Shell Locations: All 8 Permanent Shells

Find all 8 permanent Mortal Shell 2 Shell locations, the best starting Beacons, unlock requirements, and how Harros fits into the 8-vs-9 Shell count.

Mortal Shell 2 has eight permanent collectible Shells, each with its own region, unlock route, and best starting Beacon. This guide covers where to find all eight, what each one needs before it can be claimed, and an order that fits a natural playthrough.

You also control Harros during the prologue, but he is lost when it ends and cannot be kept — which is why some counts reach nine Shell bodies even though only eight are permanent. Everything below covers the eight Shells you can actually collect and keep.

Spoiler warning: this page names Shell locations and the unlocks tied to them.

How Many Shells Are in Mortal Shell 2?

Mortal Shell 2 has eight permanent collectible Shells: Tiel, Proxima, Eredrim, Smert, Gragu, Genessa, Lazlo, and Sariel. These are the Shells you keep, bond with, and carry into New Game+.

The ninth body you control is Harros, and only during the prologue. Harros is lost when the prologue ends and cannot be collected later, so he does not count toward the permanent eight. That prologue appearance is why some guides count nine Shell bodies across the full campaign, while the permanent collection — and the Shell Seeker achievement — tracks eight.

This page counts only the eight permanent Shells, so the locations below are the ones that matter for completing your Shell collection.

How Shell Location Markers Work

Tiel and Proxima are the easiest early pickups, and their search areas are marked automatically when the main campaign opens.

For the other Shells, the map lets you reveal search areas before you reach them. Balance Patch 1 changed Shell map reveals to cost Gloom instead of Glimpses, so older launch guides may show the previous price.

Markers are optional. You can find every Shell by exploring the areas below without buying a reveal — for the wider Beacon and region anchors, see the interactive map.

Recommended Shell Collection Order

This is a recommended route, not a mandatory sequence. Nothing forces the order below, but it follows the natural opening of the campaign.

  1. Tiel and Proxima first — both sit near the early Fainweald route and are marked automatically.
  2. Eredrim, Smert, and Gragu as Fainweald opens up — their areas unlock as you push through the Citadel of Penance, Nochte, and eastern Fainweald.
  3. Genessa, Lazlo, and Sariel during Mammon progression — all three are tied to the Ruins of Mammon and its bosses.

The same region order drives the main walkthrough, so the two guides stay consistent.

Fainweald Shell Locations

Five of the eight permanent Shells are found in Fainweald, including both automatically marked early pickups.

Tiel Location

  • Region: Fainweald
  • Area: Shallow grave near the early route
  • Starting Beacon: Widow's Overlook

From Widow's Overlook, follow the nearby dirt path into the marked search area. Tiel is in a shallow grave; interact with the body to begin the Shell unlock sequence.

No boss or quest item gates Tiel, which makes him the natural first Shell of a playthrough. If you are clearing the early Fainweald route anyway, the Axe & Dagger at the Shrine of Trials is a nearby detour.

Proxima Location

  • Region: Fainweald
  • Area: Shattered Beacon
  • Starting Beacon: Blackridge Pass

From Blackridge Pass, head toward the nearby Shattered Beacon structure. Enter it and continue to the back of the interior, where Proxima's body can be claimed.

The Shattered Beacon is a beacon-like dungeon landmark rather than a normal cleansed Beacon. No boss or quest item is required for the body itself, and Proxima's search area is one of the two marked automatically at the start of the main campaign.

Eredrim Location

  • Region: Fainweald
  • Area: Central Citadel / Warden arena
  • Starting Beacon: Citadel of Penance (once reached)

Reach the Citadel of Penance and work toward its central lift or platform. The route triggers The Warden encounter — defeat him, then interact with Eredrim's body in the arena.

The Citadel's entry route has its own progression, but Eredrim himself needs no extra quest item. While you are on the Citadel of Penance side of western Fainweald, you can also pick up the Crypt Key that opens the Hall of Echoes — see our Crypt Key location guide.

Smert Location

  • Region: Fainweald
  • Area: Blood-ritual ground near Prophet's Rest
  • Starting Beacon: Outskirts of Nochte

From Outskirts of Nochte, reach the nearby blood-ritual ground and complete the three blood offerings around Smert's body. Fill the remaining pools, then interact with Smert once the ritual is complete.

If the game lets you offer your own blood at an empty pool, recover your Shell before attempting another offering.

Gragu Location

  • Region: Fainweald
  • Area: One-Legged Wolf Tavern + Temple of Vatra
  • Starting point: One-Legged Wolf Tavern

Gragu is alive when you first meet him in the One-Legged Wolf Tavern. Speak with him until he asks for the Heart of Vatra, then continue east to the Temple of Vatra. Take the Heart of Vatra from the statue at the upper end of the temple, escape the changed route, and return the Heart to Gragu. After the resulting scene, his body becomes claimable as a Shell.

Eastern Fainweald access opens as early campaign progression gives you Mether's Breath, which removes the corrupted growths blocking the route. If you also want the nearby optional Tarstone reward, collect it before taking the Heart of Vatra, because the temple state changes afterward.

Mammon Shell Locations

The remaining three permanent Shells are tied to Ruins of Mammon progression and its bosses. While you are in the region, the hidden Axatana at the Forgotten Tower is a natural detour — see our Axatana location guide.

Genessa Location

  • Region: Ruins of Mammon, with the unlock finished in Marrow Keep
  • Area: Revenant Graves
  • Starting Beacon: Abbey Entrance (if activated), otherwise Outskirts of Mammon

In the Revenant Graves, interact with the red glowing Censer object, defeat Sester Secundus, and obtain the Sester's Censer. Return to Sester Genessa in Marrow Keep and complete the memory/unlock sequence to add her to your roster.

Genessa's unlock is a quest sequence rather than a plain corpse pickup — the Sester's Censer is the item that matters, and it comes from Sester Secundus.

Lazlo Location

  • Region: Ruins of Mammon
  • Area: Western keep / Royal Crypt route
  • Starting Beacon: High Lord's Courtyard

Start at High Lord's Courtyard and enter the western keep/crypt route. Descend into the underground route, defeat Vellen, High Lord of Mammon, then continue into the chamber beyond the arena to find Lazlo's body.

Lazlo's Shell is always available behind the Vellen arena, so the boss is the only gate.

Sariel Location

  • Region: Ruins of Mammon
  • Area: Chamber of Becoming
  • Starting Beacon: The Silent Steps

The Sariel route begins with an overworld encounter southeast of The Silent Steps. Follow Sariel through the multi-stage encounter as he opens the route into the Chamber of Becoming. In the final arena, destroy all four glowing resurrection objects around the room before finishing Sariel, or he will keep returning. After the full encounter, interact with Sariel's body to unlock the Shell.

Can You Miss Any Shells?

No — none of the eight permanent Shells are missable. Any Shell you skip can be collected during post-game free roam after the final boss, before you choose to begin New Game+.

Harros is the one exception: he is prologue-only and lost by story progression, and he cannot be recovered afterward. For where the post-game cleanup window sits in the campaign, see the walkthrough.

What to Do After Unlocking a Shell

When you interact with a Shell body, complete the memory/possession sequence when prompted — that is what establishes the Shell permanently.

After a Shell is unlocked, return to Marrow Keep for bonding and upgrades. For the full roster and Shell system details, see the Shells page; for bonding and upgrade basics, the Beginner Guide covers them.
