Get the Axe & Dagger in Mortal Shell 2 by finding the Chapel Key near Mushroom Village and clearing the Shrine of Trials puzzles.

Axe & Dagger location at a glance

  • Weapon: Axe & Dagger
  • Region: Fainweald
  • Dungeon: Shrine of Trials
  • Requirement: Chapel Key
  • Starting landmark: Mushroom Village Beacon

The Axe & Dagger is the reward at the end of the Shrine of Trials near Mushroom Village. First find the Chapel Key near the Mushroom Village Beacon by using the hidden illusory stone arch, return to the locked chapel or tower, enter the Shrine of Trials, solve its illusion and pressure-plate puzzles, defeat the final armored enemy, and claim the weapon.

How to find the Chapel Key

The Chapel Key is the first step — without it you cannot enter the Shrine of Trials.

Region: Fainweald.

Starting landmark: Mushroom Village Beacon.

  1. From the Mushroom Village Beacon, head toward a nearby group of enemies gathered around a bonfire.
  2. Find the nearby stone arch. This arch is magical or illusory.
  3. Pass through or interact with the arch to reveal or change the hidden area.
  4. Beyond the illusion, interact with a statue or hidden object to obtain the Chapel Key.

Some guides also refer to this key as the Mushroom Village Key or treat that name as an alternate label for the same pickup. Do not confuse it with the Crypt Key, which opens a different dungeon — see our Crypt Key location guide.

Where to use the Chapel Key

After obtaining the Chapel Key, return toward Mushroom Village.

  • The key opens the locked chapel or tower associated with the Shrine of Trials.
  • The entrance is placed near a Grisha Hunter encampment after returning from the beacon side.

Shrine of Trials walkthrough

The dungeon has a compact sequence of puzzle rooms before the weapon reward.

Room 1 — King statue illusion

  • Enter the room with the king statue or pillar.
  • Face the king statue and walk backward. This passes through the illusory or fake wall.
  • Do not try to walk forward through the illusion — the trick is to face away and back up.

Room 2 — Pressure-plate puzzle

  • Strike the stone blocks to move them onto the pressure plates.
  • Later puzzle rooms may use more than one block and plate.
  • The goal is to get each block seated on its plate to progress.

Room 3 — Final enemy and Axe & Dagger

  • Defeat the final armored knight-type enemy.
  • After the fight, collect the Axe & Dagger.

About the Axe & Dagger

The Axe & Dagger is one of the game's melee weapons, characterized as a faster melee option compared with heavier two-handed weapons. Whether it suits you depends on your playstyle and Shell choice.

Chapel Key vs Crypt Key

These are different items opening different dungeons.

  • Chapel Key opens the Shrine of Trials near Mushroom Village, which rewards the Axe & Dagger.
  • Crypt Key opens the Hall of Echoes, which holds different rewards. See our Crypt Key location guide.

Common mistakes

  • Going to the locked chapel before finding the Chapel Key. The dungeon will not open without it.
  • Missing the magical arch near Mushroom Village. The key is hidden behind the illusory stone arch, not out in the open.
  • Trying to walk forward through the king-statue illusion. You must face the statue and walk backward to pass the fake wall.
  • Confusing the Chapel Key with the Crypt Key. They are separate keys for separate dungeons.
