Mortal Shell 2 Walkthrough: Recommended Story Route

Follow a clear Mortal Shell 2 walkthrough from Marrow Keep through Fainweald, Mammon, the Corrupted Gates, and the final Unfound Path.

Mortal Shell 2 Walkthrough at a Glance

Mortal Shell 2 opens into a large, interconnected world, so there is no single forced route through the campaign. After the prologue and Disciple's Pass, Marrow Keep becomes your main hub, and the safest first major destination is Fainweald before you commit to the Ruins of Mammon. Along the way, activate nearby Beacons and pick up Shells, weapons, and upgrades when you find them.

The six main Corrupted Gate dungeons are split between the two regions, and their order is flexible. A beginner-friendly route looks like this:

  1. Prologue / Disciple's Pass — reach Marrow Keep.
  2. Marrow Keep — hub for upgrades and route planning.
  3. Fainweald — the first region to explore.
  4. Glutted Mire — Magdalena, Lady of the Woods.
  5. Sanguine Caverns — The Lost Child.
  6. Prisoners' Domain — The Nameless Captive.
  7. Ruins of Mammon — the southern region.
  8. Remaining Corrupted Gates — Withered Shoals, Faded Citadel, and Conquered Temple in any order.
  9. The Unfound Path — the final dungeon.
  10. Post-game cleanup — finish exploration before New Game+.

This is a recommended route, not a mandatory sequence. Nothing forces you to follow this exact order, but it matches the natural difficulty curve of the opening regions.

Prologue and Disciple's Pass

The opening route carries you through the tutorial content and Disciple's Pass. Village Outskirts is the first proper level after the Forlorn Village opening sequence, and its Beacon contains the Muradean Actuator, which unlocks weapon upgrades at the Tarforge.

Keep this section short: finish the opening Disciple's Pass route and reach Marrow Keep before worrying about the wider world. For the fundamentals of combat, Shells, and upgrades, see the Beginner Guide.

What to Do First at Marrow Keep

Marrow Keep is the central hub for the campaign. The important upgrade and NPC systems are based here, and you will return to it again and again as the story progresses.

  • Treat Marrow Keep as your base before heading out on a long excursion.
  • Activate Beacons as you explore — they are rest and fast-travel anchors that make the open world far easier to manage.
  • From Marrow Keep you can head north into Fainweald or south toward the Ruins of Mammon.
  • Early in the campaign, Fainweald is the more natural first destination.

For a broader view of the region anchors, see the interactive map.

Where to Go First — Fainweald

Fainweald holds the early-game route and is the safer first region. It also contains three of the six main Corrupted Gate dungeons, so most of your first campaign push happens here.

Useful landmarks for orientation:

  • Widow's Overlook — an important early Beacon and landmark.
  • Mushroom Village — a natural early destination and the starting point for the Axe & Dagger location guide.
  • Blackridge Pass
  • Gloomshade Grove
  • Citadel of Penance
  • One Legged Wolf

Not every landmark is mandatory; treat them as orientation points rather than checklist objectives.

As you travel, keep an eye out for early Shells: Tiel is one of the earliest you are likely to find, Proxima appears on the early-to-mid progression side, and Eredrim is found along the Citadel of Penance route. Optional dungeons such as the Hall of Echoes can wait — if you want its rewards now, see our Crypt Key location guide.

Recommended Fainweald Story Order

The three Fainweald Corrupted Gates can be attempted in any order, but the sequence below follows the natural difficulty curve of the region.

Glutted Mire — Magdalena, Lady of the Woods

Glutted Mire is one of the three Fainweald Corrupted Gate dungeons, and Magdalena, Lady of the Woods is the major boss at its end. The Mushroom Village side of Fainweald is the natural approach.

A practical first major objective is the Mushroom Village / Glutted Mire route, ending with Magdalena.

Sanguine Caverns — The Lost Child

After Glutted Mire, the Blackridge Pass / Sanguine Caverns route is a logical second campaign push. Blackridge Pass is a useful overworld landmark on the approach, and The Lost Child is the main boss of the domain. A Beacon must be cleansed along the route to open the Corrupted Gate sequence.

Prisoners' Domain — The Nameless Captive

Prisoners' Domain is the third Fainweald Corrupted Gate domain, and The Nameless Captive is its major boss. The Citadel of Penance area lies on the broader Ruins of Nochte / Fainweald progression side and is a useful landmark before this stage — it is also where you can find Eredrim along the way.

Treat Prisoners' Domain as the final major Fainweald objective before committing to Mammon.

When to Go to Mammon

Once you feel comfortable in Fainweald, head south to the Ruins of Mammon, the region that holds the remaining three Corrupted Gate dungeons.

  • Activate the Outskirts of Mammon Beacon early when you enter the region.
  • Useful landmarks include Sester's Gate, Gate of Infinity, Castigator's Keep, Abbey Entrance, Abandoned Outpost, Gate of Mammon, The Silent Steps, and the High Lord's Courtyard.
  • If enemies feel dramatically stronger than they did in Fainweald, returning north for Shells, weapons, and upgrades is a reasonable choice — there is no strict level requirement.

The region also hides optional weapon pickups such as the Axatana at the Forgotten Tower; see our Axatana location guide if you want it early.

Recommended Mammon Progression

The three remaining Corrupted Gates can be tackled flexibly — treat the following as advice rather than a rule.

Once you reach Mammon, a route through Gate of Mammon / Withered Shoals first can make the region easier to learn, while Faded Citadel and Conquered Temple can follow as your build improves.

Withered Shoals — Hexapod

Withered Shoals is one of the three Mammon Corrupted Gate domains, and Hexapod is its main boss. It is part of the main campaign progression and can be cleared in any order relative to the other gates.

Faded Citadel — Isaac, the Scholar Prince

Faded Citadel is a Mammon Corrupted Gate domain whose main boss is Isaac, the Scholar Prince. Like the other gates, it is flexible in order and part of the main campaign.

Conquered Temple — Droeg the Conqueror

Conquered Temple is the Mammon Corrupted Gate domain associated with Droeg the Conqueror. It is part of the main campaign and can be tackled whenever your build feels ready.

How Ova Progression Works

The major Corrupted Gate bosses are followed by Beacons that award large amounts of Ova, and Ova are required for continued campaign progression. As you clear gates, bank the Ova and return to Marrow Keep between regions to spend them on progression.

Balance patches can change boss difficulty and the upgrade economy, but the main route and region progression remain the same.

How to Unlock the Unfound Path

After clearing most of the Corrupted Gate campaign and banking enough Ova, return to Marrow Keep. The route to The Unfound Path opens as you reach the endgame.

Completing all six Corrupted Gates before the finale is the cleaner route for a first playthrough.

Final Dungeon and Ending

Spoilers for the endgame below.

The Unfound Path is the final major dungeon, accessed later in the campaign after enough Ova and progression. Inside, three major encounters guard corrupted tendrils that block the way to the end:

  • Orrem, the Reclaimed
  • Monolith
  • Malborn Offspring

After clearing these barriers, the final boss awaits: Zmey the Unbidden.

What to Do Before New Game+

Defeating the final boss does not force you into New Game+ immediately. You can continue from Marrow Keep, and missed Beacons, Shells, dungeons, and most other cleanup remain available after the credits.

Beat the final boss, then use the same save to finish optional exploration before choosing New Game+, which is entered later through the Marrow Keep progression interaction — the Ova Siphon.

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Going deep into Mammon too early. Fainweald is the safer first region, and Mammon enemies can feel dramatically stronger.
  • Ignoring Beacons. They are your rest and fast-travel anchors — skipping them makes the open world far more punishing.
  • Treating the six Corrupted Gates as a rigid mandatory order. Their order is flexible; the route above is a recommendation.
  • Clearing every optional dungeon before basic upgrades. Optional content such as the Hall of Echoes can wait until your build is stronger.
  • Starting New Game+ before finishing cleanup. Anything you want to finish on this save is easier to do before you commit to NG+.

FAQ

Do I have to beat all six Corrupted Gate bosses in order?

No. The six gates can be cleared in flexible order. The Fainweald-first route above is recommended for a smooth difficulty curve, not required.

Can I explore after the final boss?

Yes. Defeating the final boss does not force New Game+ — you keep exploring from Marrow Keep and can finish cleanup before choosing NG+.
